Galliford Try Takes on a Massive CSO Improvement Project!

The Stroud Sewerage Strategy is a sewer improvement project and investment by Severn Trent, one of the largest water companies in the UK’s Midlands. The project aimed to increase sewer capacity and storm event storage through a new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) in Stroud, a town in Gloucestershire, near Bristol. The project’s scope ranged from making trunk sewer improvements, updating the combined sewer overflow and storage, the separation of surface water, and the reduction of infiltration. Galliford Try, one of the UK’s leading design and construction groups, was brought in to build the second trunk sewer system. The goal of the project was to help reduce the risk of flooding, transferring flows 3.65km to the new CSO site on the outskirts of Stroud.

The Challenge of Monitoring Temperature Differentials in Mass Concrete

The logistics of working on a new CSO required extensive verification that would keep the project aligned with the pre-established scope set by Severn Trent. In March of 2022, the construction phase began with tunnel drive shafts and reception shafts. As the new trunk sewer was designed as a mass-pour project, Galliford Try quickly found they needed concrete sensors that were user-friendly with simple installation and cost-effective to access essential temperature data. They especially needed real-time temperature tracking and validating temperature differentials from the core of their pours relative to the surface.

SmartRock® Helps Galliford Try to Achieve Data Interoperability and Increase Efficiency

To successfully ace their mass concrete pours, Gallifrod Try piloted SmartRock wireless concrete sensors after hearing buzz about them through the industry. Upon implementation, the team observed the immediate real-time access to temperature data, facilitating seamless sharing with their remote designers with the use of the cloud-based platform, Giatec 360™. Notably, the time required for installation, management, and data interpretation represented a substantial improvement, achieving approximately a 50% increase in efficiency. Setting up the 10 sensors was an easy task, while daily monitoring and data download took only 10 minutes. SmartRock’s user-friendly design, devoid of trailing wires or data collectors, helped streamline the concrete pouring process and kept the schedule up to speed.

You Can Guarantee Optimal Results With SmartRock!

All in all, while the Stroud Sewerage Strategy is yet to be completed, Galliford Try has been able to achieve major success in the construction phase of the shafts and trunk sewer, marking a crucial phase of the project. The integration of SmartRock wireless concrete sensors played a pivotal role in enhancing operational efficiency and streamlining data sharing with remote designers. The real-time temperature monitoring capabilities of SmartRock were the best solution for the challenges of mass concrete, ensuring that Galliford Try delivered results in line with the goals of eliminating flooding risks and enhancing infrastructure resilience in the Stroud region.
