How to Monitor Temperature Using a Sensor or Thermocouple for Mass Concrete

In recent years, the development of large concrete structures has become increasingly common due to its many structural benefits. Concrete presents a number of characteristics that improve the sustainability performance of a structure. Not only does it offer advantages regarding sustainability due to its low carbon emission during the construction phase, but it also offers durability, increased structural capacity, resistance to fire and flooding, and optimal sound isolation. This blog will delve into defining concepts, as well as the importance of recording and monitoring the measurements of concrete with sensors or a thermocouple for mass concrete structures.  What is a Mass Concrete Element? Mass concrete is categorized as any volume of concrete with dimensions large enough to require that measures be taken to cope with the generation of heat hydration of the cement and attendant volume changes to minimize cracking. When it comes to large bodies of concrete, one of the…

Concrete Setting: What it Is, Why it’s Important and How to Test It

According to ASTM C125 – 20: Standard Terminology Relating to Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, the concrete setting is “the process, due to chemical reactions, occurring after the addition of mixing water, that results in a gradual development of rigidity of a cementitious mixture.”   In other words, the concrete undergoes a process called hydration, in which the major compounds in cement form chemical bonds with water molecules. Hydration causes concrete to harden and become durable enough for its intended use. The setting period begins when the concrete is placed and continues until it has developed the desired properties.   Depending on the specific application for which the concrete will be used, it should have a relative humidity of more than 80% and a temperature of more than 10°C (50°F) for 3 to 14 days. This can be tested using a concrete setting sensor….

Curing Boxes vs. The Maturity Method: Maintaining Concrete Temperature Onsite

Concrete curing temperature is undoubtedly a critical part of construction. According to a report by ACI Committee 308, the American Concrete Institute defines “curing” as “the process by which hydraulic-cement concrete matures and develops hardened properties over time.” This process can be negatively impacted if freshly placed concrete is exposed to temperatures that are too high or too low. The beginning stages of the process are essential to the success of the project, as curing directly influences the quality of your overall structure. Continue to read for more information on curing boxes and the maturity method. Strength gain during this early stage is rapid but will slow the longer the concrete cures. A proper cure has the following benefits for your completed structure:   Click here to learn more about concrete curing!  Using Concrete Cylinders to Test for Concrete Strength To…

Building Clean Energy: Mass Concrete Temperature Monitoring with SmartRock®

As global initiatives to go carbon-neutral continue to push the demand for sustainable and renewable energy sources, many are looking to wind farms as a green solution to energy needs. Wind power has been used as an energy source for centuries – from windmills grinding grain to sailboats traversing bodies of water. However, as more and more of the world depends on electricity to function, wind is now being harnessed as a source of electricity.   Wind turbines, usually grouped into “wind farms”, operate by converting kinetic energy from the air into electricity. This electricity can be used locally or directed into the power grid to fulfill more remote electric needs. Because wind farms require no fuel and create no pollution, they are becoming increasingly popular as an environmentally-friendly way to produce electricity.   How Are Wind Farms Built?  A wind turbine is composed of a tall tower with a nacelle and rotors at the top. The nacelle is a…

Dallas Bridge Margaret McDermott Eliminates Testing to Save Money

Photo by Art Davis, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons  The Margaret McDermott Dallas Bridge over the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas, was intended to replace the I-30 bridge built in the late 50s to early 60s. The bridge cost over $100 million to build and features a design resembling a suspension bridge. The part of the bridge designed for pedestrians and cyclists was supposed to open in 2017, but it remains closed. Now, it is going to take two more years and $7 million dollars more before pedestrians will be allowed to use the bridge.   Why did this disastrous result happen? The simple answer is a lack of bridge testing. In order to lower costs, the hike and bike bridges used value engineering to cut costs by $3 million. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, value engineering is “the process…

Wired vs. Wireless Concrete Temperature and Strength Sensors

Since the commercialization of the maturity method, there have been important advancements in monitoring and computing technologies such as a simple thermocouple for concrete, wireless sensors, manual data entry, cloud sharing systems, and more. When deciding between wired or wireless loggers to measure the temperature and strength of your in-situ concrete, it is important to take into account the type of data you’re collecting, the ease of collecting data, and on-site handling of the sensors. What Is Concrete Temperature Monitoring? One of the most important steps in the construction of a concrete structure is monitoring the temperature of your slab after placement to ensure proper curing of the in-situ concrete. This is especially true during extreme weather conditions when the mixing and curing of concrete are subject to different environmental elements. If freshly poured concrete is exposed to temperatures that…

Coring vs. Maturity? What’s the Best Way to Test Concrete Strength?

The quality of your concrete directly depends on proper curing and accurate strength tests. While there are several different methods used to test concrete strength, not all of them are equally efficient. Below, we compare two methods of strength testing: concrete coring and concrete maturity. For more methods, see our blog detailing seven different ways to test concrete strength! Concrete Coring Coring is the process of drilling and extracting cylinders of concrete for testing. These samples are then mechanically compressed to determine the strength of the in-place concrete. These cylindrical samples are intended to be representative of the concrete as a whole, and are generally used to verify or disprove low strength results obtained through other means of testing, such as field-cured cylinders. The cored cylinders allow for an analysis of the concrete’s: Compressive strength, Splitting tensile strength, and Depth…

Mastering Post-Tensioning in Cold Weather Conditions with Smart Technology

Post-tensioning is a critical component of modern construction, providing the structural strength needed for large-scale buildings and infrastructure projects. However, when cold weather enters the equation, it can create significant challenges in ensuring the success of this process. Low temperatures slow down concrete curing and strength development, making it more difficult to achieve the required tensioning at the right time. Fortunately, with the advancements in concrete monitoring technology, contractors and engineers can now manage these challenges more effectively.  At Giatec, we’ve transformed how construction professionals approach cold weather conditions with our innovative SmartRock® technology. This game-changing wireless sensor gives real-time insights into concrete temperature and strength development, offering critical support to the post-tensioning process during the colder months.  The Impact of Cold Weather on Post-Tensioning  In cold weather conditions, the concrete’s hydration process slows, delaying strength development. This has direct…

Monitoring Concrete Temperature With Wireless Sensors

Running temperature measurements of your pour after placement is one of the most important steps in the construction of a concrete structure. That is why ensuring optimal curing conditions for your element is critical, especially during extreme weather conditions. The hydration process (the chemical reaction between hydraulic cement and water) can be drastically impacted if freshly placed concrete is exposed to temperatures that are too high or too low, compromising the strength development of a mix design. Furthermore, if temperature differentials are too high, thermal cracking can occur. By closely checking temperature measurement variances with concrete temperature thermometers during element curing, you will ensure that the strength, quality, and durability of your structure are acceptable. Find a concrete temperature solution for your next project! When monitoring concrete temperature, one of the most commonly-used devices is thermocouples.  There are wired sensors…

The Limitations of the Concrete Maturity Method

As a company that develops and produces concrete testing equipment, we can’t stress how important it is to properly test concrete with reliable equipment. In the last decade, we’ve seen the arrival of real-time sensors that make it easier than ever to gather data and put it to good use. As maturity becomes more and more popular on jobsites around the world, we thought we would shed some light on what the concept of concrete maturity is and what its limitations are.  What Is the Maturity Concept of Concrete?  As stated in ASTM C1074: Standard Practice for Estimating Concrete Strength by the Maturity Method, the maturity concept of concrete can be used to “estimate the in-place strength of concrete to allow the start of critical construction activities such as: (1) removal of formwork and reshoring; (2) post-tensioning of tendons; (3)…

Concrete Maturity vs. Concrete Cylinder Test: Which Method is More Effective?

When it comes to any construction project that requires the use of concrete, whether it’s a hospital, residential building, road, bridge, or dam, concrete strength testing is an essential step in ensuring the integrity and durability of a structure. Furthermore, whether or not a project will move forward is dependent on those test results, impacting a project’s timeline and budget, as well as a company’s reputation. The ability to gather the most accurate data is of utmost importance to contractors, managers and engineers alike. The Concrete Cylinder Test The concrete cylinder test involves casting concrete cylinders on-site before sending them off to a third-party lab for compression testing. This method involves two types of concrete cylinder specimens: According to ASTM C31: Standard Practice for Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field, field-cured concrete samples have the same temperature…

What Is Post-Tensioning and How Does It Affect Concrete Strength?

Understanding Compressive Strength vs. Tensile Strength   Ensuring your concrete is durable and stable isn’t just about achieving an acceptable level of compressive strength, which is the concrete’s ability to withstand loads that crush or squeeze it. You also need to consider its tensile strength, and the concrete’s ability to withstand loads that will likely elongate or stretch it. Since concrete naturally has a relatively high compressive strength and low tensile strength, contractors will often apply reinforcement techniques to increase the latter.  Concrete structures such as office buildings, parking lots, bridges, and sports stadiums require high tensile strength. Without them, the concrete will struggle under the weight it has to carry due to a lack of flexibility. This leads to cracking and weakening of the structure. For example, if a parking lot’s beams are subjected to heavy loads of cars without…
