Remote and Real-Time Measurement of Concrete Quality

Measuring Concrete QualityMonitoring concrete quality is essential to understanding the design and service life of concrete and is critical for decision making on any worksite. Despite this, gathering and analyzing concrete conditions and health properties is a complex and laborious process that can lead to costly use of resources and time-consuming challenges. Current concrete quality measurement solutions are restricted by their sensor technology requiring users to be physically onsite to gather data. The user has to stand close to the sensor inside a building transferring data onto their phone using Bluetooth. This demands constant travel to locations, making constant real time monitoring an impossibility. Explore 12 Futuristic Technology Trends Solving Concrete’s Biggest Challenges. A Look at Discrepancies in Concrete Strength Testing

As a general contractor or subcontractor working on a concrete structure, one of the most important tasks is ensuring that the concrete has been properly cured and its quality has been tested according to applicable standards. This is of the utmost importance for quality control and quality assurance purposes. Equally important is selecting an appropriate and accurate method for monitoring the strength of in-place concrete. Unfortunately, popular methods of testing concrete quality, especially compressive strength, are frequently subject to discrepancies. Explore 12 Futuristic Technology Trends Solving Concrete’s Biggest Challenges. Download our 2025 Innovations Calendar! Download Now Cylinder Break TestsIf the project is anything like most other concrete construction sites, break tests are likely used to monitor the strength of newly placed concrete. This practice has remained mostly unchanged since the early 19th century. There are two types of specimens that…

Sensing a Change: Concrete Sensor Technology Gaining Acceptance as Contractors Look to the Future

Breaking concrete cylinders to test the compressive strength of concrete is standard practice for a reason. It’s relatively simple, cheap and when done right, accurately reflects strength. At the same time, break tests have changed little for decades and this lack of innovation is catching up with the commonplace method. The Best Concrete Sensor in 2020

Concrete Construction PlanningIn a construction project, concrete is often on the critical path. Most of the jobsite activities can not be initiated unless the concrete that is placed for building structural elements such as beams and slabs has achieved sufficient strength (typically 75% of the specified compressive strength of concrete). If concrete is not cured properly in favorable temperature ranges (at least more than 5°C or 40°F based on ACI 306) after pouring, it is quite possible to have a slippage in the project plan and timeline due to the delayed strength development in concrete. Curing temperature is also important when it comes to mass concrete placements such as foundations. If the temperature differential between the surface and core of the mass concrete element exceeds a certain level, there is good chance of concrete cracking due to thermal stresses. Project managers,…
