Corrosion is the process of deterioration of a material due to chemical reactions with its environment. Corrosion can occur in various materials such as metals, concrete, and polymers. It can cause the loss of material, change in the physical and mechanical properties of the material, and ultimately lead to the failure of the material. In metals, corrosion typically occurs due to the reaction between the metal and an oxidizing agent, such as oxygen or moisture. The resulting reaction can lead to the formation of metal oxides or salts, which can weaken the metal and cause it to deteriorate. Prevention and control of corrosion can be achieved through several methods, like surface coatings, cathodic protection, corrosion inhibitors and material selection.
